Innovations... A Way of Life, the Way to Live
UNIK

SPECIAL UNIT ESTABLISHED TO PROMOTE INNOVATION

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 2010 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak Friday announced the establishment of a special innovation unit (Unit Inovasi Khas or UNIK) under the Prime Minister's Department, to strengthen the strategy and policy to help promote innovation in the "heart" of Malaysia.

UNIK, which will be operational in two weeks, will complement the National Innovation Centre which was announced in October last year, a statement from the Prime Minister's office said Friday.

Najib also agreed to the appointment of Datuk Dr Kamal Jit Singh as the Chief Executive Officer of UNIK and NIC.

Dr Kamal Jit has wide exposure in global innovation management and once served as the Chief Executive Officer of British Telecom's Research and Development Centre.

The statement also said Dr Kamal Jit was the founder of the Global Innovation Research Centre, board member of the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and is an active author and columnist on innovation.

The statement also said UNIK will formulate policies and strategies for the establishment of the National Innovation Centre, with emphasis placed on unity and synergy in activities and programmes to be carried out.

UNIK, a small unit staffed by professionals from both the public and private sector, will operate as a strategy planner while the centre will assume the role of implementing division.

The statement also said the special unit would be responsible for creating a conducive eco-system to propel the development of innovation in Malaysia, including promoting innovation in the public sector, universities and education system.

It added that UNIK will identify successes, best practices and methodologies from around the world and will adopt them in the Malaysian context, taking into consideration the innovation needs of foreign investors.

Innovation has been identified as the main mechanism to improve Malaysia's competitiveness and to attain the objectives of the New Economic Model and the 10th Malaysia Plan in line with the commitment to jump start the national innovation agenda.
